IDENTIFYING CHARACTERS:
Maxillary palpus of female
almost as long as either the antenna or proboscis
Postspiracular setae absent
Prespiracular setae present
Scales on the dorsal surface of
the radial sector and media narrow
BIONOMICS:
The larvae are found in many shallow water habitats containing emergent
and floating plants and plant debris. Females will enter houses at
night to feed, and will also feed during the day if their resting
places are invaded. Females have been found up to two miles from suitable
breeding sites.
MEDICAL IMPORTANCE:
This species is a potential vector of malaria in the United States.
