| The neotropical sand fly fauna consists
of three genera, Lutzomyia, Brumptomyia and Warileyi.
The most recent comprehensive monograph of the genus Lutzomyia (Young
and Duncan 1994) lists 375 species and subspecies grouped in 15 subgenera
and 11 species groups (which new world systematists consider equivalent
in rank), and 16 species which are unassiged. Twenty-five species are
proven and probable vectors of human leishmania parasites, all belonging
to the genus Lutzomyia. Brumptomyia consists of 22
species none of which are know to bite man; Warileyi consists
of 6 species, some of which are anthropophagic but none of which are
suspected of human disease transmission. Seven new species and the unknown
male of another species have been described since Young and Duncan (Feliciangeli
1995, Le Pont et al. 1995, Le Pont et al. 1996, Leger and Ferte 1996,
Ogusuku et al. 1997(1998), Andrade Filho et al. 1999, Bejarano et al.
2004). No new species of Brumptomyia or Warileyi have
been described. All 382 species, including the 25 vector species, are
found in the SOUTHCOM AOR. The species links below will provide information useful to both the layman and the professional entomologist. Although many pages are still under construction, when complete each page will contain the scientific name, the bibliographic reference to the original description, brief notes on the habitat of the immatures, the biting habits of the adults, diseases that they can carry, and a map showing countries in which a species has been found. |
