Section I: Recognition and Identification of Phlebotomine Sand Flies

If a Lutzomyia female, what species might it be?

To identify female Lutzomyia to species we look at three main internal characters: (1) the antennae, (2) the cibarium, and (3) the spermatheca. The spermatheca tends to be the clearest character, but when in doubt use all three to verify the identity.

The specimens must be cleared and slide mounted for accurate identification.
