Bionomics

  • The larvae occur in temporary rain-filled pools, particularly in or near thickets, in overflow pools along streams, and occasionally in potholes in stream beds after summer rains. They develop rapidly. The females are persistent and painful biters. (Capenter and LaCasse 1955)

Medical Importance

  • Females of this species frequently carry eggs of Dermatobia in eastern Colombia and havee also been found infested with Dermatobia eggs in Panama (Capenter and LaCasse 1955). It is also a potential vector of venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) (Forattini 1965).
