(Brunetti 1914:55). Reinert 1974a:3 (syn.). Bionomics
As far as it is known, species of Verrallina
are found in temporary ground pools. Some are adapted to breed in
frequently flushed jungle pools while others breed in more open coastal
pools not subjected to frequent flushing. Ve. cuccioi
has only been collected in stream bed pools and ground level tree holes
in stream beds. Females of several species attack man readily, mostly
during the day and largely in shaded areas, especially in the vicinity of
forested areas. In the South Pacific Ve. carmenti
and Ve. lineatus are serious pests, the
latter being a semidomestic species.
